WEEK 2 OF THE LAB NURSERY DIARIES

We hope that sharing some of our experiences with this litter will be fun for the new owners to read as well as informative to those thinking of purchasing a Lab puppy in the future or possibly breeding their Labrador Retriever.

WEEK #2 The Puppies Are Thriving

WOW -- Where did the last week go?
Well, there were days spent sitting watching the puppies nurse, feeding Ali 4 times per day (plus a few snacks here and there), time weighing and doing puppy exercises, changing papers and padding in the box, laundry and more laundry and a few nights with little sleep. Things are settling into more of a routine now and Ali even takes short breaks away from the puppies to go out for a short run in our pastures with the other dogs or sit and beg at the dinner table!

2/11/05 Happy One Week Birthday to the puppies! You can see that they take up a lot more space by their mom now.

What happens during Week 2 with the litter:

  • Pigment of nose, lips, eye rims and pawpads is now in on the yellow puppies
  • Eyes will open around days 10 to 14
  • Ears willl open around days 10 to 14
  • Faces will look more and more like a Labrador
  • Puppies increase in weight by 2 to 3 ounces per day
  • By end of 2nd week pups may be starting to stand
  • "Super puppy" exercises continue

2/16/05 Puppies weigh about 35 oz. each now and are getting very active. Tonight Green collar boy has opened one eye! He is the first to do so.

2/17/05 The black girl is up and walking. She is the first one to really walk around in the whelping box.
